Grandpa Green By Lane Smith
2012 Caldecott Honor Award Book
Grandpa Green is a 2012 Caldecott award winning honor book. It is written and illustrated by Lane Smith. Lane Smith has illustrated many books, including some by Dr. Suess. The story of Grandpa Green is told by his great grandson. The grandson tells about events of Grandpa Green’s past. As we read the text, we see beautiful green plant sculptures illustrating each of grandpas memories, from past to present. The grandson seems to be very fond of his great grandfather. His great grandpa uses his plant sculptures to remember the stories of the past, which he has shared with his great grandson. We don’t see Grandpa Green until close to the end of the book. This creates a lot of anticipation for the young reader/listener.
